What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a deluxe filling that is customized to look just like your natural tooth, right down to the shape, size, and color. It is molded to seamlessly replace the look and feel of your natural tooth, and it fits over it, protecting it from further damage and restoring its function so you can use it to eat without requiring an extraction or dental implant.
If the roots of your tooth are still stable and healthy but it is cracked, has excessive decay, or needs a root canal, you may be a good candidate for a dental crown.
The Dental Crown Process
To get a dental crown, Dr. Valdez will first take an impression of your tooth. He will then remove the decayed area and provide you with a temporary crown. This will give you a preview of what your crown will look and feel like so you can get used to it before your permanent restoration arrives. Following the placement, you will be free to go home and resume normal activities. In about two weeks, your permanent crown will be delivered from the dental lab, and you will be scheduled to return to have it placed. Once it is cemented, you will be free to use it to chew a full variety of foods.
At Advanced Dental Care, Dr. Valdez uses only the highest quality materials in his dental crowns, including porcelain fused to metal, zirconia, porcelain, gold, and porcelain fused to zirconia.
Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown
There are many benefits to getting a dental crown, including preventing the damage to your tooth from worsening or causing more oral health problems. Dental crowns prevent the need for extraction or dental implants, and provide benefits including:
- Improved comfort
- Protection of your natural teeth
- The ability to customize the size, shape, and color
Dental crowns are easy to care for, too. Just brush and floss them as you would your natural teeth. Though they can chew a full range of foods, they should not be used to chew fingernails, pen caps, or open packaging. Furthermore, be sure to avoid using them to crunch things like hard candy or ice. With proper care and usage, your crowns could last 15 years or more.
